Playwriting July 12 - October 4 Ages 9+ An exciting course for students interested in the craft of playwriting, based on the premise that playwriting is an extension of acting. Students will learn the basic principles of playwriting through written exercises as well as improvisation work and complete a one-act play (10-15 pages in length). Plays written on the adolescent experience will be eligible for production in the Studio's annual Winter Shorts Festival of one-act plays. The cost of the 13 week program is $295. SummerScene July 7-18 Ages 9-12 SummerScene is a two-week intensive program for students ages 9-12. Participants work from 9-3 preparing productions of story theatre and an old fashioned melodrama. SummerScene is directed by Dan Barnes and Steve Hays. It takes place July 7-18. Parents and friends are invited to view the melodrama on Thursday, July 17 at 7PM and the story theatre piece on Friday, July 18 at 1:30PM. Video Production Workshop July 21 - August 1 Ages 13 - 19 This exciting new workshop will teach students the basic elements in producing television and film. The course will cover familiar genres such as ads, news clips, interviews and movies. The students will produce videos in each genre with production assistance from the teaching staff. Students will be divided into small teams composed of a director, camera operators, sound operators, and actors, each supervised by an experienced videographer. Editing will take place in the Studio’s new video lab, complete with state-of-the-art equipment. Videos will be shared with the community on the final day. Director: Steve Cary. TeenScene August 4 - 15 Ages 13 - 19 In this two-week camp students will learn how to detonate the explosive potential of their bodies. We will explore a variety of non-conventional theatre techniques from multiple cultures including Greek, French and Japanese, in order to learn how to go beyond the ordinary into the extraordinary. Students will learn to use their voice and bodies spontaneously to create powerful and dynamic moments on stage. We will study mask, clown, mime, theatrical martial arts, and a variety of other physical disciplines designed to hone the actor*s intuition rather than intellect. TeenScene will culminate in applying these new methods to a classic play that the students will present in a deconstructed format. Director: Dan Barnes, August 4-15. SummerSlam August 18-22 Ages 9-12 Tall tales have long been a tradition in American culture, from the frontier Paul Bunyan stories, through the writings of Mark Twain up to the contemporary radio shows of Garrison Keillor on PBS. We’ll explore stories, fables, riddles, jokes and songs and create a comic Tall Tale Revue to be presented on the final Friday. Along the way, we’ll learn about comedy improv, stand-up monologs, and comic scenes. Director: Dan Barnes August 18-22 (One week) Cost: $215 |
