Stories on Stage

This camp will be a true test of your improvisation and performing abilities! You will grow as an actor as you create an entire production of Story Theatre and Story Improv for pre-school and kindergarten audiences to attend by the end of the week!  We’ll perform stories, poems, alphabet games and even improv the young audience’s stories for them. You will gain character, voice and performance skills as you bring favorite stories to life, and turn the ‘page into stage.  We will also perform our Story Theatre Production piece for your family and friends on Friday afternoon.

Note to Actors: please also bring in favorite children’s books, fables, poetry, etc that you think might work onstage.

Note to Families: we would welcome volunteers to help with our pre-school audiences.  If you are able to “greet and seat” or help with the workshop, please let us know.  These performances are part of Drama Studio’s outreach program to children at risk in Springfield, and are a great way to have our actors be significant role models.

Here’s your chance to be part of the Drama Studio’s longest-running production intensive, where we’ll stage a complete full-length melodrama with dastardly villains, faithful heroes and heroines, and perhaps a damsel in distress!  Past productions have included daring train-track rescues, fierce battles, charming orphans, and saving the day in the nick of time!  Audiences will cheer the heroes and boo the villains as you present this year’s melodrama, complete with full costumes, scenery, make-up and even some song and dance.  You’ll strengthen your acting, improvisation and character-building skills and gain production experience in Summer Scene: Melodrama.  This camp also includes opportunities for actors to write and stage their own original scenes, monologues and dances.

July 14-25, 2014 (9am-3pm)

Drama Studio’s Summer 2014 Teen Workshop Series

Movement for Actors - Monday & Tuesday, August 4-5 (9am-3pm) - $150

This two-day intensive will explore how an actor can make the best use of their physicality on stage.  Through studying the techniques of Suzuki, Mask Work, Anne Bogart’s Viewpoints, Yoga for Actors, and more, we will investigate the power of movement as a tool for communication and expression. Dress to move!

Acting Shakespeare - Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, August 6-8 (9am-3pm) - $200

Arguably the most celebrated playwright in history, Shakespeare’s words continue to enthrall, delight, and baffle actors and audiences in theaters worldwide. This three-day intensive offers an accessible way into Shakespeare, and provides actors with the tools to fully realize and embody the power of Shakespeare’s text.  By studying Shakespeare’s many rhetorical devices students will discover how to identify the clues Shakespeare left for actors to help them speak his text most effectively.  We will also discuss the historical context of Elizabethan England and the societal perspective from which the plays were written, the role of Shakespeare throughout history, and the relevance of Shakespeare in the 21st century.

Stage Combat - Monday & Tuesday, August 11-12 (9am-3pm) - $150

A two day workshop in the art of stage combat in which students will learn to perform safe and realistic violence on stage, as well as gain the tools to create original fight choreography.  Day one will focus on unarmed combat and day two will be an introduction to weapons work.

Comedy Improv - Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, August 13-15 (9am-3pm) - $200

Through exercises and games, students will build skills in spontaneity, listening, and physical comedy.  Students will explore scene work, group games, comedy improv and comic scenarios.  Improvisation helps students to be more expressive, and to use the body, intellect and voice more fully when reacting to the stimuli of a scene.
